Match Report
DINOS EVENING REX-ED BY STARS
After being surprised to find himself captain and agreeing an 18 over match to cope with the incipient gloom, Duggan panicked at the toss, called heads and lost. Dinos chose to bat on Pitch A and with Gary still some way away Superstars opened with Farnham and Harris. Sam’s first over was a maiden and he bowled a tidy spell (3-1-18-1) but Harris (3-0-26-2) was struggling to find his line, although his second over claimed two wickets as well as 2 wides. Catches were going to hand (one each for Arun, Conway and Aaron C&B) so it seemed possible that we would restrict them to a manageable total.
Legend Mike Taylor (3-0-17-1) at first change maintained a degree of control. However, the remaining Dino’s opener and middle order continued to score at a healthy lick elsewhere (three retired), aided by more wides and a few miss-fields. Anand (3-0-16-1) and the late arriving Plahe (2-0-12-0) managed to rein it in at the death but the Dinos total of 132-5 looked strong and included a whopping 41 extras (all wides and a NB – no shade on Adnaan Ali’s creditable debut as wicketkeeper, which included a catch).
Sajjan and Conway opened but although Arun (1) went early, Matthew (25 retd.) and debutant Craig Spencer (13) built the innings sensibly. This allowed Anand (26 retd.; 2x6) to accelerate and Ali (10 n.o.) and Harris (12 n.o.) to finish off in style, with Aaron’s 6 to win getting us home with 8 balls to spare. It probably helped that the opposition fielders could not see the ball in the gathering dusk, while the batters benefited from the sightscreens.
It was a really exciting match with LT Dinos looking deflated at the end as they had probably expected 132 off 18 overs to be a winning score (and to be honest so had many of us). Victory was celebrated quietly with the old hands of Barry, Steve and Mike T reminiscing in the bar.
