It is often believed that the seemingly innocuous and un-controversial Mr William Walker is a direct descendant of the great whiskey maker, Alexander Walker, who brought us the Jonnie Walker label. This is a delicate rouse to camouflage more sordid undertakings.
It is not widely known that Will in fact changed his name by deed poll to that of his hero, and as he will tell it, mentor, the 1850's and 60's filibuster William Walker. The parallels with his namesake are astounding. Both were child prodigies, graduating top of their classes in their early teens. By their mid twenties they were building small elite armies with the intention of invading neighboring islands and ceding power back to the mother land. William Walker once declared himself president of the resource rich state of Baja California (Mexico), he was eventually over-thrown but undaunted he went on to control the important shipping lanes of Nicaragua and again declare himself president.
Unfortunately for modern day Will he is unable to think quite like his hero, who saw great potential in the resource of the lands he invaded, and has sights set on invading Ireland, with his back-up plan being Iceland. Given the economic crisis enveloping both of these nations there is a fair chance that Will can triumph in his plans, unfortunately for Will all he is likely to achieve, is inheriting enormous debt which the mother country will not be willing to take on leaving President Walker high and dry to rule a land of discontent and debilitating austerity measures.
Fortunately for Will there he will not befall the same fate as William Walker as there is no death by firing squad for implementing ill-conceived plans. It is just as well that Will, in an effort to be more like his name-sake, has developed a penchant for the Central American staples, rice, tortillas and chili beans as there is a better than even money chance this is all the Republic of Wilreland may be able to afford.
While he may not have the makings of a revolutionary, his temperament and skill on the cricket field is much more befitting his nice-guy demeanor. Behind the stumps he has the grace and speed of a cat (and considering a cat can't catch, might explain why he has more stumpings than catches), while his "posh" shots and occasional aggression has seen him become one of only four batsmen to average over 50 for the club. For this reason I implore one-and-all to play as much cricket with Mr Walker as you can before he is lost to the world of filibustering forever.
Will's batting is comfortably in the top 10 most runs ever scored by a Superstar, with many years on his side to continue rising up the rankings. He is also one of only three players to have a batting average of over 50 and the only player to have made 3 centuries for this great club. He is also in the top 5 fielding dismissal makers - but interesting is the only Superstar to have taken more stumpings than catches. His bowling is rarely used outside sports days (which don't count for stats).
Will was honoured to join the Superstars Committee in 2010 but has now achieved office and power that only US Presidents can compehend when he became Superstars Chairman in Janaury 2015.
