Ken Block Trophy
v TREASURY SOLICITORS, 29TH AUG 2013
SUPERSTARS STEAM OVER T SOL
TREASURY SOLICITORS 178-9 (Anand 3-22, Conway 3-19) LOST TO
SUPERSTARS 182-7 (Spencer 38, Gigg 27no)
Superstars turned up for the season finale knowing that a winning record for the year was already assured and hoping to finish the season on a high. Expecting to be facing a team of government lawyers, and maybe get some free legal advice, Superstars were a little surprised to see they were facing half the Walthamstow colts side. Unperturbed, normal service was quickly resumed as Barry lost the toss and T Sol chose to bat.
"It's alright" said the Superstars opening bowlers who kept it very tight at the start. Vijay (7-2-22-3) picked up a wicket first ball and Alok (7-2-30-1) got a rare dismissal caught as Matt took an excellent skier at cover to see off the dangerous looking number 3. Vijay picked up another wicket, bowled for a duck before Rick (6-2-15-1) surprised everyone by bowling a "gold" delivery which span through the gate to bowl another man for a duck. With Rick keeping it tight at one end, the T Sol batsmen took on Mike D at the other end but, having missed a good chance earlier, Adam got a run out to keep wickets falling. However, with one of their openers still in and passing 50, T Sol were accelerating. After Kenny toiled against the talented young E17 batsmen with little reward, Vijay came back to break the partnership and Matt bowled well at the tail to finish with 3 wickets (4-0-19-3) including the skipper for 69 and the number-3-who-turned-up-late-and-batted-at-10 for a quickfire 21, which helped T Sol to a decent looking 178 in their 35 overs.
With the usual plan to see how it goes for a few overs at first working well, Paul was unlucky to get a rare straight one and be bowled for 12. What seemed like bad luck began to look like a pattern when James N, after a few nice shots through the covers, was also bowled in similar fashion for 12. Matt C decided to bring the "thunder" against the first change bowling, including a big 6 and dismissively hit boundary in consecutive balls to get above the rate. After Matt was bowled playing back to one which kept a bit low for 18, Adam decided to dig "Deep" and fight the urge to get himself out that had been plaguing him all season by working in 1s and 2s. Batting with Barry this was always likely to tire Adam out but when he was bowled for 38, by one that bounced a bit and deflected off the pads, Superstars were well set. Rick and Barry kept up the rate until Rick hit one back to the bowler for 9. Vijay provided some big hits, trying to finish it early, but when he miscued one slightly and was caught in the deep for 19, Superstars were left needing 14 off 4.2 overs. Rich Abigail and Barry saw about collecting the runs in a calm, collected fashion and, with 9 balls remaining, the scores were tied. At this point Barry decided to "Slow it Down", seeing off 3 dot balls and giving Rich the chance to be the hero. Unfortunately Rich fell LBW for 8 from the first ball of the last over, leaving it to Kenny to finish things off. With the field up, Kenny obliged, smashing his second ball to the boundary. A special mention should go to Barry who saw the side home with a real captain’s knock of 27 not out.
Overall a great way to finish the season in a good game against a good oppo which left Superstars wishing they could "Play Another Day".
