Ken Block Trophy
v KENSINGTON WAND'ERS, 24TH JULY 2013
SAINTLY PERFORMANCE BY SUPERSTARS
KENSINGTON WANDERERS 108-8 (Anand 2-14, Smith 2-19) LOST TO
SUPERSTARS 110-4 (Gaught 26ret, Anand 25ret)
On another scortching July day Superstars took on Kensington Wanderers, a team we'd never beaten before in three attempts, at the expensive Chiswick ground. Barry lost the toss and we were asked to bowl first.
Jeremy and Roy set the tone with some excellent bowling. In fact probably the only bad ball was the one where ROy picked up a wicket, caught by Alok. Vijay and Alok joined the attack with both keeping the run rate down - Vijay took 2 wickets in over. Ric and Mark W bowled very effectively with the slog on to chip away with wickets and not letting the opposition get away. Coupled with efficient fielding Superstars had kept Ken Wan to 108-8 in their 20 overs. The total felt 20 short of par, mainly down to excellent bowling (Jez 1-15, Roy 1-22, Vijay 2-14, Alok 0-13, Ric 2-19 and Mark 1-21).
Paul G and the in-form Will opened the innings well (after a shaky first over from Paul) until Will was given LBW for 14. I think umpire Varghese had decided at least one of the three appeals were probably out. Adam joined Paul and was just getting going when he got a good yorker for 8. Paul retired for a typical 26 (dodgy start, got better) and left Superstars in a strong position, going on at around 5 an over. Both Mark W (6) and Ric (9) contributed and kept the rate required down. The key overs were probably 13 and 14 where Superstars scored 20 runs, with Vijay starring, this took the rate required down from around 6 an over to under 5. When Vijay retired (25) Alok (9no) and Barry (5no) were in charge of safely getting to us the target, and they did with 3.3 overs to spare.
One of those days that reminds us we're not hopeless at this game. Against a good side we played solid cricket throughout with everyone contributing. The kind of performance that makes it all seem worthwile!
