IT'S A LONG WAY TO SUNBURY..... |

It’s a long way to Sunbury. It’s an even longer way back when you’ve
lost and your personal contributions are a golden duck (albeit having a swing in the final over) and three overs
that went for 0-30odd. Of course it’s not literally an even longer way back but it does literally take longer
because the trains are slower. Remind me why I play this game again? |

A lot of the talk was about how much better we’d have done if we’d
had more than eight men (two of which were late arriving). But the stats categorically show that we’d have won
it with seven if I had been the man to miss out. |

We actually batted quite well on a difficult pitch. Barry and NJ
put on an excellent opening partnership with NJ enjoying the no retirements rule to go on past 25 and into the 30s.
Aran and Alok also chipped in and Vijay pushed the score up to a very respectable 150ish with a nicely timed knock
that culminated in some powerful hitting. |

But with only eight in the field (and no offers forthcoming from the
otherwise friendly oppo) it was always going to be a lot of hard yakka on the big, fast, dry outfield. And so it
proved as Alok and I went round the park early and all the bowlers suffered a bit. Alok kept it interesting with
a peach of a yorker to dismiss their dangerous number four. (Golden) Aran made it more interesting with three middle
order wickets from three well held catches. And NJ’s death over started to look very interesting with a couple of
dots before a couple of big blows capped a well-timed Hounslow chase and gave us the result we probably expected all along. |

Our eight men out-drank the oppo at the bar afterwards at least. But
it’s an even longer way back from Sunbury after that. |
