Ken Block Trophy
v DODGERS, 4TH SEPTEMBER 2008
Superstars played Dodgers in the biggest sporting contest anywhere in the world this year. With both previous arranged contests cancelled this one was winner takes all. There were two shocks before the game started - 1. Sandeep turned up on time, 2. Superstars won the toss. With the wicket and overhead conditions looking good for swing and seam captain Paul "Bungle" Gaught elected to bowl. Sandeep and Mike Taylor opened the bowling and took advantage of the conditions, Sandeep bowling through for figures of 7-4-4-2, clean bowling both Mike Dollin and Neil Preist. When Harish Kumar came on and had Phil McBarron caught by keeper Will Walker and Mickey Tate dismissed opener Taylor, caught by skipper Bungle Dodgers were struggling on 50(ish) for 4. In strode Guy Westhead and Raj "but you play for us" Vadgama who led a recovery but Superstars still had the run rate well under control. Harish finished with fine figures 0f 7-1-15-1 and now Paul Dyett offered a spin option. Suddenly there were dropped catches (the skipper very guilty on one occasion) and it seemed that Raj had more lives than a cat sanctuary. Finally Guy was stumped by Will off Mickey's bowling and the dangerous John Hilary was bowled by Paul. Mickey ended with 7-0-37-2 and Paul with 6-0-20-1. Mike Taylor returned at the death and bowled (at last) Raj for a innings saving 34 and Chris Mountain bowled a couple of death overs picking up the wicket of John Cooper. Mike ended with 6-0-29-1 and Chris with 2-0-11-1 while Robert Fox hit 11 not out and Kim the Cat ensured Dodgers batted out their full 35 overs with 0 not out. Dodgers had made 122 for 8, a tough target considering the conditions and Superstars' batting form this season!
Bungle opened with Chairman Meyler, while the two Johns (Hilary and Cooper) opened the bowling for Dodgers with tight spells. Steve was caught behind (Kim's 99th catch for Dodgers) off Hilary and Will strode the crease. It may not have been flamboyant or pretty but Will and Paul batted sensibly and saw off the two Johns (it was good night from them) but after 14 overs we were only on 34-1. Robert and Raj came on to bowl and the run rate did now increase, with Paul being possibly the only batsman ever to raise his bat at 44 runs due to some dodgy maths from the scorer(s). At 51 Paul tried to hit a ball on the legside (always an error) and caught off a top edge by Cooper off Raj, Superstars were 87-2. Unfortuately there was a mini collapse with Will following Paul back to the "pavillion" for 27 and Chris caught and bowled by Raj for 1 by a delivery that looked like a bump ball from the stands, but wasn't. With Superstars at 102-4 there was nervousness and it called on big men with nerves of steel, we had Sandeep and MarK Williams. They got us virtually there but Mark was caught for 12 (so close to a HS again) so Mike T went in. Sandeep hit the winning runs (his final one of 12), as promised at the break, Mike produced a faultless 0 not out (good running) and we'd won by 4 wickets with 4 overs spare.
A good performance in the last game of the season, even the "killer" at the pool table was of high quality (who won?) and after some indifferent performances a good finish to the season. Well done everyone.
Team: Gaught (capt), Meyler, Walker (wkt), Mark Williams, Mountain, Sandeep Kumar, Mike Tayor, Harish Kumar, Tate, Dyett.
