v DEFRA ALLSTARS, 6TH MAY 2010
DEFRA YIELD GREAT VICTORY FOR SUPERSTARS
Superstars 183-3 (Conway 25ret, Walker 28ret, Thornton 26ret, Spencer 28ret) BEAT
DEFRA 31 all out (Moxon 4-9, Kumar 2-7, Vadgama 2-14)by 152 runs.
MAY 6TH 2010 WAS AN HISTORIC DAY - SUPERSTARS WON BY OVER 150 RUNS (OH AND THERE WAS SOME VOTE THINGY)
OK, first things first. We were playing DEFRA, but last year they were under the DECC banner. And it appears they'd lost a few players.
There was no toss (the nearest we get to a victory to Barry) and Superstars batte first. Paul "current vice" Gaught and Matt "old vice" Conway opened up and were going fine until Paul tried a pre determined shot and produced a hideous X rated heave. Will Walker joined Matt and the Superstars loyal support (one person more than usual) were treated to some fine stroke play with Matt 25 retired and Will 28 retired. Debutants Scott Thornton (26 retired) and Ian Moxon (21 bowled) batted beautifully. Barry then shattered out Adam Spencer (28 retired) with some crazy ideas about running threes and quick singles before he was bowled for 24. Chris Plume made an encouraging debutant 4 not out and Raj an, err, entertaining 2 and Superstars ended with an imposing 183 for 3 in their 20 overs.
Harish Kumar and Ian Moxon opened the bowling but no one expected what was to come. For a start Ian took a wicket with his first ever ball for Superstars. A great achievement that can only be equalled by an Ashes series victory. But greedy Ian didn’t stop there and juggernault through the DEFRA top order with 3-0-9-4, an amazing effort which does suggest retiring as the only option - we hope not though! Harish's excellent bowling was rather overlooked with 3-0-7-2. Barry at this point turned to spin with Raj twirling away with some clever spin bowling, including a wonderul faster ball for 3-0-14-2 but again was possibly unstaged by a debutant, this time off spinner Chris Plume who again might be considering retirement with figures of 2.2-2-0-1. Nice! There was a also a faultless performance from Richard Abigail. DEFRA were unfortunaltely short of some of their better batsmen and were dismissed for 31 giving our heros victory by 152 runs - a record victory we believe. Great effort.
Barry Gigg (capt), Paul Gaught, Matt Conway, Will Walker, Scott Thornton, Ian Moxon, Adam Spencer, Chris Plume, Raj Vadgama, Richard Abigail, Harish Kumar.
The game was followed by drinks in the White Hart, a public house I very much enjoyed, despite chucking have my pint on the floor on Tuesday (amazingly the only drop of the week).
